Citizenship & Community Standards Home
The right to vote is a significant
privilege and responsibility as a United
States citizen. Harry Emerson Fosdick
has stated: “Democracy is based upon
the conviction that there are
extraordinary possibilities in ordinary
people.” In 2004, 81.6% of registered
18-29 year olds turned out to vote. The
Higher Education Act of 1998 requires
institutions of higher education to make
a “good faith effort” to get their
students registered to vote. This web
site
partially fulfills that institutional
responsibility under federal law.
Truman State University strongly
encourages students to register to vote
and to
exercise
that privilege and responsibility in
local, state, and federal elections.
